Tools You’ll Need
Before you start, make sure you have the right tools ready.
You’ll need a flathead screwdriver and a Torx T20 or T25 screwdriver, depending on your model.
A 16mm socket wrench and a ratchet extension are also required.
A trim removal tool is optional, but it can make the process easier and help avoid scratches.
Important Safety Step (Don’t Skip This)
Before touching anything, disconnect the battery.
This step is critical because you’ll be removing the airbag.
Disconnect the negative terminal and wait at least 10–15 minutes before continuing.
This however is optional but you can safely remove the airbag without disconnecting the battery, however car can not have ignition on or else it will throw an airbag light. Make sure your car falls asleep.
MAKE SURE IGNITION IS OFF, KEY IS NOT INSERTED, RADIO IS OFF, ALL LIGHTS ARE OFF.
Step-by-Step BMW E90 Steering Wheel Replacement
1. Remove the Airbag
On the back of the steering wheel, you’ll find two small holes, one on each side.
Insert a flathead screwdriver into each hole and push inward until you feel spring type of resistance, the are linkages which release the airbag when you press down on them
Carefully pull the airbag forward once it loosens.
After removing it, disconnect the airbag wiring connectors.
Set the airbag aside safely with the front facing up.
2. Remove the Steering Wheel Bolt
In the center, you’ll see a large bolt, usually 16mm.
Hold the steering wheel steady while loosening the bolt with a socket wrench.
Do not fully remove it yet—leave it slightly threaded for safety.
3. Pull Off the Steering Wheel
Gently wiggle the steering wheel until it becomes loose.
Once it breaks free, remove the center bolt completely.
Carefully slide the wheel off, making sure not to damage any wiring behind it.
4. Install the New Steering Wheel
Align the new steering wheel with the center shaft. There is usually a guide marking to help with positioning.
Slide the wheel into place carefully.
Reinstall the center bolt and tighten it securely.
5. Reconnect the Airbag
Plug the airbag connectors back into place.
Push the airbag firmly into the steering wheel until it clicks.
6. Reconnect the Battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Start the car and check for any warning lights on the dashboard.
Steering Wheel Compatibility (E90, E91, E92, E93)
